I wonder…

…if Ravelry has just sucked the life out of most knitting/crochet blogs. I sure know it has taken a toll on mine!

I am currently addicted to the Gedifra sweater that I started last week. It’s been a very fun knit! I am finished with the front and back which means I get to cast on for 2 three-quarter length stockinette sleeves today. I can’t decide if I want to do them at the same time or separately. There are no real pro’s or con’s on the issue, it’s just what strikes my fancy when I sit down to cast on. I have a sneaky suspicion that it is going to be too big even though I knit the small size & my gauge is perfect. I added length to the body because I want a more tunic length style sweater. I am very excited to have it done soon!

The Venezia hasn’t had much work done on it lately. I had a bad head/chest cold and lost my motivation on it. I couldn’t follow the chart so the Gedifra sweater took over priority #1. Once the Gedifra is done I plan to re-focus on the Venezia. I am well into the armhole so the body shouldn’t take me more than a day or two to finish. Then the sleeves. I have yet to truly read the pattern so I am not quite sure what to expect. Are they in the round? Are they flat and then seamed? I have a sneaking suspicion they are in the round and that just makes my joints ache on such small diameter needles. Magic loop will be the trick with this one, not the 11″ circs I would normally use for sleeves in the round.

Speaking of sleeves in the round, the Trapeze jacket has taken a serious hit in the attention dept. This is where it’s at right now.

And for now that is where it’s staying ;o)

The sleeves in the round with tons of short rows for the shoulder shaping is killing my joints. I may need to beef up on joint juice before I pick this one back up!

Knit & Quilt

Sewing was my passion long before knitting and crochet.
My mother taught me to sew when I was around 6. I was always allowed on the sewing machine at any time for any reason.
In high school when I didn’t want to hold down a normal, fast food, kid job I decided to market myself around school and make formal dresses for all of the school events. I made a dozen or so and actually was paid pretty well for it.
I have made my sisters wedding dress, my own wedding dress and part of my sister in law’s wedding dress (she was too frazzled to deal with so mom took over).
I sewed incessently while pregnant with my first 2 kids. Insomnia and the need to do something productive took over. Maternity clothes and baby items were my specialty at that time. A few quilts, nothing fancy, all squares and rectangles.
My mother quit sewing clothes after the last wedding dress, that would be my sister in law’s. Too much frustration. She couldn’t stay away from her machine though. No matter how hard she tried, it kept caling to her. The dozens of little hand tied quilts and flannel recieving blankets for her ever blooming grandchild count just wasn’t cutting it. Finally she took the plunge and true quilting took over her life.

She now has a long arm quilt machine. She pumps them out for use, not for show really. She has a few she has made that are hands off, just to look at but the functionality and usefulness of a quilt is what she’s really all about.

Now, the bug has bitten Tracy.
About a year ago, after mom got her new quilt machine, I started buying some of the more trendy quilt books. Kaffe Fassett, Amy Butler, Denyse Schmidt, etc. Their fabrics are gorgeous, the style is what I like. It works!
I just can’t bring myself to sit at the machine. George even bought me a new sewing machine a few years back and other than a few needle cases and purses and repairs to clothing I haven’t used it at all. Nothing fabulous has come off that machine. It makes me sad, depresses me a little that I have lost the love of sewing. I think it will come back eventually but I just can’t seem to find it right now. I have tried. Tracy and I bought all kinds of fabric for skirts and now, 3 years later, her fabric has been sent home with her never becoming a skirt.
I have a ton of fabric.
My lack of motivation for sewing has even led to letting the kids raid the fabric and use whatever they like for whatever they want. If it gets ruined I am not sad about it. In stark contrast, when they breathe on my yarn (even the crap stuff) I have a heartattack and nearly fall over.
I have taken to buying curtains and linens instead of sewing them to my exact taste.
I just find this whole thing interesting.
And now that Tracy is interested in sewing and quilting, my interested is piqued. I can’t say I am rarin’ to go but I did buy myself a little quilt pattern and fabric at the Ontario Quilt Show that we went to last Saturday. You can read all the details on Tracy’s blog with amazing pictures of amazing quilts.

The top only takes 8 fat quarters and they came in a pack, colors & fabrics already put together. I washed them as soon as I got home and now it’s just cutting that needs to happen. Oh yeah, then the sewing ;o)

On to knitting news.
I have finished the Hourglass Sweater and didn’t read the errata. Thought I was smart enough to pick up on any problems. Right. I totally didn’t do the raglan shaping right, I followed the incorrect instructions. It fits great, I love the color and I am not, I repeat, I am not ripping out the raglan to re-do it. It can stay funky and noone will know the difference. Those that read this blog, if you say anything to me while I am wearing it be prepared to get a beat-down. Plain & simple. I just don’t care. If you aren’t a knitter you won’t know that there is something wrong. Maybe someday I will rip it back and fix it. Until then, it’s getting worn the way it is.

As soon as it was finished on Sunday I cast on for the Gedifra Merino De Luxe  Design 509 sweater from  the Gedifra Highlights 033 book. I am using Red Heart Soft Yarn in Dark Leaf. (throw tomatoes at me for using acrylic, I don’t care)

That is the back and it is finished up through the armhole shaping. I only have about 6 more inches and the back is done. It’s knitting up much faster than I expected! The front is exactly the same with 3/4 length solid stockinette sleeves. Then I do a mock neck collar with the cables continuing all the way up to the bind off. You can see a finished one on Knits & Pieces blog. Or a bunch on ravelry.

With the cold I have been battling I haven’t worked on the Venezia since last Wednesday. It’s not a chart I want to contend with while my head feels like it’s a big red balloon. My plan is to get back to working on it as my main focus everyother day consistently. I should be done with the body in one day then it’s on to the sleeves. I am still concerned it’s going to be too small but we won’t really know until it’s finished and blocked out.

gone for a bit & now I am back

Sorry about that folks!

I had a blog issue that is now resolved & hopefully won’t happen again.

I have been knitting pretty steadily on my Venezia Pullover, I am now to where I divide the stitches for the steeking. Which means the body is only 6″ or so away from being finished! Then the sleeves need to be knit. They should be pretty quickly, they are 3/4 sleeves after all.

I finished a few Le Slouch hats, by Knit and Tonic, as in between projects.
This first one I used Lamb’s Pride worsted in Aubergine. I didn’t have a full ball so it’s not as slouchy as I would have liked but I did add a crocheted flower to give it a little something.

This second one I used leftovers from a blanket I made (it only has the edging left to do). Cotton Ease in lake blue, lime green, stone, taupe and charcoal.

It’s just the right amount of slouchy to hold all my hair on those bad hair days. Or windy days. Or rainy days.
I have a very distinct feeling that between the Tuva Slouch hat and this one I will be well covered ;o)

Last week Tracy and I went on a knitting machine bender and whipped out some early, early Christmas gifts. Sadie loved them so we let her choose the yarn for one of her own.

well, that is maybe not the best picture but as you can see, it’s a hooded scarf. I did an eyelet edging around the hood and the ends of the stockinette scarf. It rolls a bit but it’s not bad. She wore it for 3 days straight. As well as that sweater which Tracy made years ago and sat hidden in her house with all the ends haning out. I told her it was time for us to go through our older knit stuff and give what we could to the kids. Sadie ended up with all of it and was rather happy about it too.

The Hourglass sweater is now ready to have the sleeves joined so it looks like sleeves will be all I am working on for the next few days. At least they are fast on 11″ circs. I am pretty pleased with how that sweater is turning out. The Noro Cash Iroha yarn is fabulous to work with and knits up in a beautiful texture. I will get more pics taken of it soon.

Other than George burning his arm and face last week and spending 3 days in the hospital, not much else is going on around here.
Yes, George had a bit of an accident at work last Thursday. Long story short there was a gas explosion and George has first & second degree burns on his face, neck, left ear and his right hand and arm. We are so, so very lucky and blessed that it wasn’t any worse.

His forearm got the worst of it. They kept him until Saturday to do debriedment on the arm and make sure that with his diabetes he didn’t get an infection. I can’t believe how much a serious burn can take out of you. Yesterday by far was his worst day but today he’s feeling really good and back at work. It was good for him to sit in the hospital for 3 days with no tv, no entertainment. At first he was chomping at the bit to get out. Then he realized that he could take advantage of that time to re-think his stress levels. I am hoping that it was a truly changing time for him. Stress and anxiety really takeover with him and he has a difficult time realizing what’s worth the stress and what’s not. Running his own construction company doesn’t really help. All responsibility falls on his shoulders. They are broad shoulders but he can’t do it alone. Every once in a while he needs a reminder from God that he’s not doing this all by himself, that he’s being held up by Someone greater and stronger than he could ever be on his own. I like God. ;o)

So, more pictures to come of the sweaters in progress!

Cast On Craze

I have been casting on more than my fair share of new projects in the past week. I have about 4 more that I am forcing myself not to start. Lots of mittens, gloves, a skirt & many, many sweaters. You can always browse my Queue in Ravelry to see what’s on my mind.

One sweater being the Cherry pattern that Susie is working on. I am going to use Kertzer Butterfly 10 cotton in teal.

It’s a beautiful color, a tad darker than in the picture though. With the cloudy, rainy day I had a hard time getting the light settings right.

For now, I am working on the Venezia Pullover and the Hourglass Sweater. It’s nice to move from crazy-chart-colorwork to plain-old-boring-stockinette. Of course there are a few small items that get done in between just because the fancy strikes me.
I have started Tracy’s latest Silkie Socks that Rock, colorway Gingerbread Dude, socks twice & frogged them twice. I do believe I have found the perfect pattern for the yarn and her taste. It’s a simple picot edge, top down, short row heel, ankle sock. I like it. I like it a lot. I just hope the fit is good for her :o) You would think after a dozen pair for her I would have them fitting perfectly, I don’t think I do.

I hope you all are having a great start to your New Year. I love how January makes me feel! I get more accomplished knitting-wise in the first few months of the year than the rest of the year combined. Happy Knitting New Year!
