This is a great three season, lightweight sweater knit using Berroco Remix Light, a yarn free of animal fibers, and is made from recycled fibers. It works up beautifully in this stranded colorwork pattern. This is a great choice for those knitters that have a hard time with wool.

Knit from the bottom up and seamless, you are highly motivated to get through the ‘boring’ stockinette to get to the simple + fun colorwork yoke.

The yarn is available at Picket Fence Quilt Co in Wichita, half a dozen colors available now with the full line of colors arriving in mid September. Plenty of time to get that swatch done before class.

Pattern available for free through the online knitting magazine, Knitty.com.

Wichita Knitters’ Guild – Growth and Education for Knitters

Growth and Education for Knitters

Source: Wichita Knitters’ Guild – Growth and Education for Knitters

For all those that are interested, a new TKGA affiliated guild has started in Wichita.
It is NEW, the Central Kansas Knitter’s Guild that meets in Newton will continue meeting in Newton monthly and the two are not the same.
The Wichita Knitters’ Guild plans to collaborate (and has already started doing so) with the CKKG to bring more knitters together in their educational and social programs.

Please, sign up for the Wichita Knitters’ Guild email list, it is TOTALLY SEPARATE from my Firebrunette Knits email list.
The link to the Contact Information Form is on the website listed above, as well as on the Facebook page.

I think it’s going to be a great addition to our Kansas knitting community!

Please visit the website for more information on dues, meeting times & location.
Happy Fiber Crafting!!

Guitar String Beader Tutorial

I am putting this a few places for easy reference…
Okay, so tonight I started a shawl with beads and I am using the guitar string method and I must say I think it’s brilliant.
Here, let me show you…
First I took a 6” piece of thin acoustic slinky guitar string that just so happened to be on my table next to me from Josh playing & adjusting his guitars the other night.
Second I bent one end about an inch up, all the way over 180 degrees.
Then I strung beads on the other still straight end. I was able to get about 90 8/0 beads on the wire.
Finally I took an eraser from a pencil and slid it as a stopper on the straight end. I did bend that end but now I am thinking I should have left it straight for taking off the eraser & reloading beads.

To use:

  • Once the beads are on, you knit to the stitch that needs the bead.
  • Hook the stitch with the bent crook of guitar string & remove from needle, move a bead up on to the 2 pieces of string and off on to the stitch. It’s much easier to move the bead than pull with the guitar string.
  • Put the stitch back on the left needle and knit the stitch.
  • Using the bent end of the guitar string, hang from your knitting so it’s right at hand.

VOILA!!!

Here is a photo collage to help.

EZ as Pi

Progress above is on 3/28.
Progress below is on 3/29. Up to 576 sts, 96 rows to go before another increase…whew!

I love that there is ZERO brainwork on this project. I am hoping once I go through my 3 skeins of Noro sock yarn it will measure close to 72″ across blocked.
I am using 3 colors and alternating them every 3 rounds. Part of what makes this go so quickly is my impatience to see what the colors are going to do next. It will be a perfect spring & fall lightweight blanket for ME!!

My Mom Will Love This Post ;o)

So, remember when you & Dad left me home for a long weekend with Ali when we were 14 and we shaved our heads and dyed our hair without asking? And then you bleached mine to pumpkin orange then re-dyed it to black. You didn’t care if my hair was black, the point was that I didn’t ask first.

Well I am not necessarily asking since I am 37 but I am informing you that there will be head shaving happening here soon…this humidity is killing me and I don’t think I can stand the underneath part of my hair becoming dreadlocks every other day any longer. I shaved Josh’s hair in to a mohawk (how his hair is meant to be naturally I have decided ;o)) tonight to help keep him cool at work. He wears his hats all the time anyways but with such thick, wavy dark hair it gets pretty hot. As soon as I was done and looked at him it was like he was 16 again! Weird yet not weird at all. Until we reconnected the last couple years and his hair was longer, grown out, I had only known Josh with a mohawk. Always, always I coveted his perfect dark wavy mohawk. Now I get to touch it and fondle it all I want.
And as far as my hair goes; ringlet sideburns, shaved sides, that’s where it’s heading. No crazy colors this time around though…at least not right now…that is Cori’s thing lately with purple and blue ;o)

So, that is my hair processing for tonight…now to get a good night’s sleep so I can shave with a steady hand!

2012…What, pray tell, will it bring?

I had no clue 2011 would bring a new husband, a move to Kansas, and a new baby on the way. I also had no idea it would bring with it so many ups & downs!

I despised a lot of things at the beginning of 2011, I had a lot of hope for some things (and people) that ended up breaking my heart.

But, I was unexpectedly changed by life. Where I lost one love I gained another, more true and honest than I thought I could find. It happened a lot faster than I thought it would too. I was prepared to be a single mom for the long haul. I guess the best laid plans…well, those are the ones that usually get turned upside down.

3 months is all the time that is left until this little baby is born. The last 6+ months have flown by. I wish I could say I was even the littlest bit ready to have a newborn, a baby, a toddler…that is me future trippin’ as my husband likes to say. If I remember correctly I am in for a lot of NO SLEEPING. That, if you know me at all, is a very bad thing. It was bad when I did this in my early 20’s…it will be terrible in my late 30’s… 🙂

This pessimist in me is a persistent bugger. Being married to a Sagittarius, like myself, is very interesting. I am not used to someone just knowing why I feel or act the way I do. Or even mirror each other without either of us realizing it right away.

I love my life. I got myself so used to being frustrated, grumpy, woe-is-me, for a long enough time that it is taking me a little while to come around to truly seeing my life for what it actually is. Filled with joy, love, new changes everyday! I have 3 kids that love me, dote on me and love our life. The same 3 kids are also head over heels in love with Josh. He loves them and they love him. I am one lucky woman.

So I say, bring it on 2012!
