New February Brioche Class at the Studio

Thank you to everyone that has taken a class, or three, this last month at the studio. It has proven to be a great success.

I love January, the newness of the year.
I have been finishing projects right + left, sweaters, shawls, cowls, mittens, all pulled from my WIP pile. I have this nagging guilt about ongoing projects, but in my line of work it is rare that I get to work a project start to finish without something else popping up.
In all honesty, I could probably work on just WIPs for the next year solid and not finish them all (we’re talking close to 60 knitting projects + a dozen crochet).
If you are like me, and absolutely a floozy when it comes to casting on, go grab a project that is over 50% completed and get it finished!! It will feel so good, I promise!

If you are already registered in the March 7th Brioche class and would like to change to the new date, please don’t hesitate to contact me and switch!

Russian Join in Fingering Weight Single Spun Yarn

This last month at Wichita Knitters’Guild Tami Carlson taught about weaving in ends in lace, and this join was a large part of the discussion so I wanted to demonstrate how fabulous (and so easy)  it is to do.

First, I chose a needle just smaller in diameter than the yarn, with a very sharp tip. Both in this photo are acceptable, I’m using the longer needle for the demonstration just because I can ☺️

Next, I take my new yarn crossing it over the old in a t, then folding the ends back on themselves.

Thread the needle in one end, it truly doesn’t matter which end of the two you start with. Now begin weaving your needle through the same yarn; new to new, old to old, for at least 3″ on each side.

Do you see the loop at the bottom of the woven yarn, where the other end is laying through? You need to pull the tail of the yarn you wove back on itself to close that loop down on the other strand of yarn.

Once both ends have been woven back on themselves, make sure both loops have been pulled tightly closed and feel smooth when you run your fingers across them.

Pull both yarns,  letting the tails hang, testing your join, and at the same time, smoothing things out.

Voila! Knit right on over that join.

I like to wait to cut my ends until after my piece has been fully blocked, always remembering to cut them close to the fabric on the right side (public) of my work so the ends pop to the back if seen at all.

Week 26 Update

I should put this under the Body, Body, Body page since that is what it’s all about…but I won’t…

Maybe it’s time to talk about the changes this body is going through. I almost feel like I am just along for the ride and it’s going to do what it’s going to do without my consent or acknowledgement.
I am still wearing almost all non-maternity clothes with the help of the Belly Belt Combo Kit.
I
feel…how do I feel? Well, hormones are my enemy. I am emotional, sometimes sad, sometimes quick-tempered, sometimes giddy, most of the time just like normal…I hope.
I feel this little kid moving a lot now. It’s funny, I will forget I am pregnant and then, kick!punch!bam! Overall I am surprisingly comfortable as far as the aches and pains go. With Trevor (10+ years ago) I had so much more happening with my body; sciatica, aches, pains, indigestion, headaches. Not this time…knock on wood. A few nights of heartburn, a few headaches, and the only time I have any achey-ness is when I have worked 8-12 hours on my feet with no extended periods of rest. Like tonight, at work, on my feet.
The ultrasound was a huge relief! I love seeing the blood flow of the baby, the heart, the stomach, the brain, it’s little hands and feet. It was moving and kicking like crazy the whole time, didn’t like the intrusion I am thinkin’.

I had myself all excited to find out the sex and then, no go. So now I am finding I am back to happy not knowing. Frustrating for others, I understand, but I just don’t care. We have our names picked, we both like neutrals/unisex colors so it works for us.

I do think I will post in the Body, Body, Body page and talk a little more in detail about dealing with the weight gain, body size issues and my bulimia/anorexia. Not on the front page though 😉
